Dry ice blasting explained
Dry ice blasting, also called dry ice cleaning, is a minimally abrasive compressed-air blasting process that uses dry ice pellets (carbon dioxide / CO₂ in solid form, −78.5 °C cold) as the blasting medium.
- The dry ice particles are accelerated by compressed air (ideally to supersonic speed) and "shot" onto the contaminated surface.
- Thermal stress in the dirt causes the contamination layer to break up. The sublimation shock – the sudden expansion of the dry ice particles as they change from solid to gas – "blasts away" the contamination.
- Surrounding contamination can easily be cleaned off the broken-up dirt layer.
- What remains is a clean surface – entirely without blasting media residues.
